First Blog - August 2025
So….I’ve never written a blog before, but this seems an apt time to start. Today I’m launching my new photography venture properly, and whatever becomes of it, I’m pleased to have given it a go!
It all started just less than a year ago in September 2024. I was not in a good place in my personal life, mentally very unwell, and had just relocated from Newcastle to York. With a gap in between jobs, I went to visit an Auntie, who told me she had something to give me. She passed me a black rucksack, which I thought was nice, but I didn’t particularly need one! However, upon picking up this rucksack, it felt quite heavy. Upon opening the bag, I found a Canon DSLR camera, complete with three lenses and accessories to boot! My Auntie told me to use it to fill my time. She herself has taken some amazing pictures from all around the world, and it really meant a lot to me.
Over the months that followed, I fell in love with photography. There is something cathartic and uniquely therapeutic about losing yourself behind the lens. Seeing the world for its simplistic beauty, capturing something special and being able to surreptitiously filter out the often grinding noise of the everyday world.
Mentally, it has worked wonders for me. I’ve taught myself up to this point, and will continue to learn and improve, as I imagine every photographer does.
It also provides strange (and sometimes entertaining) scenarios. In the quest to take the perfect shots, I’ve found myself accidentally locked in someone’s back yard, stood on a bin which fell over with me going through the lid, being chased by a goose and dropping my camera in someone’s kebab. As the months have gone by, after many kind comments and plenty of encouragement, it felt time to share my work properly and see where it goes!
Fast forward nearly a year, and I’ve set up a website, Facebook and Instagram pages. Finally, I’m ready to sell my prints, which is something of a surreal thought!
What you see on here is just a snapshot (waheyyy), of what is to come. Already my “portfolio'“ has grown to a fair size, and I will be adding more to this website as I go. More photos of wildlife (which is comfortably my favourite type of photography) will follow, as well as more from various cities and places I love. There will of course be plenty from Newcastle, Durham and York. Three cities all close to my heart.
For now though, thank you for reading. Dan.
